Top 100 tackle Josh Garnett commits to Stanford

Posted by Jerry Hinnen

The home of one of college football's best 2011 offensive lines might have just received a commitment from its next David DeCastro or Jonathan Martin.

Maxpreps top 100 offensive lineman Josh Garnett of Pullayap, Wash., announced at a Thursday afternoon press conference that he will be sign with Stanford. The 6'5", 300-pound five-star recruit chose the Cardinal over his other finalist, Michigan, and offers from several other national programs including Cal, Notre Dame, his home state Washington Huskies.

As you would expect from any recruit listing Stanford, Michigan and Notre Dame as schools under consideration, academics played large role in Garnett's decision. He reportedly plans to study in Stanford's pre-med program before applying to medical school.

Garnett is ranked by Maxpreps' Tom Lemming as 2012's No. 26 overall prospect and the nation's No. 1 interior line recruit. Despite that ranking, Garnett could eventually play either tackle position or even on the defensive line, making his versatility a major selling point. In his evaluation, Lemming writes:
On film [Garnett] looks as good as or better prospect than [fellow Washington blue-chip OL] Zach Banner but he is 4 inches shorter. Nevertheless, he has what it takes to become an All-American at either tackle or guard in college. He loves to mix it up, he shows good work habits and plays the game on his feet ... He is adept as both a pass and run blocking, shows exceptionally quick hands and feet, a great first step, does a great job of getting to the second level and burying linebackers, has an aggressive style of play, plays with a passion, and has proven to be a very good all around athlete.
Stanford is already ranked No. 25 in the Maxpreps team recruiting rankings and could be poised to move up with commitments like Garnett's or fellow five-star Andrus Peat, who will choose between the Cardinal, USC, Florida State or Nebraska.
