Top quarterback Winston commits to Florida State

If you are a college head coach looking for a Top 100 quarterback in the class of 2012, that ship has pretty much sailed.

The nation's top dual-threat quarterback and number two overall at the position, Hueytown (Ala.) signal-caller Jameis Winston made his decision and came off everyone's recruiting board as he verbally committed to Florida State Wednesday afternoon.

"I'm just comfortable that's where I want to be," Winston said on national television. "I'm very confident and see myself there in the near future."

The 6-foot-4, 200-pounder is a threat to beat you with his arm and his legs. He was recently named an MVP at the Elite 11 quarterback competition in California and has a terrific blend of athleticism that just gives defenses fits. Winston is still a bit raw but provides the Seminoles with a future star at the position.

While at the Elite 11 last month, he was able to get a glimpse at his future by asking current Florida State quarterback E.J. Manuel about what it takes to be the quarterback in Tallahassee.

"I've asked him about Florida State and their program," Winston said. "He's been pretty real with me. He's told me the ups and downs - there's not many downs but he told me some."

Alabama and LSU were Winston's other finalists. Living about an hour from Tuscaloosa, it was tough to pass on the local football powerhouse but the talented quarterback is extremely happy with his decision even if a few others are not.

"Alabama fans, they're probably going to hate me," he said on television. "But my job right now is not to please the fans in general. I'm just focused on leading my high school team to a state championship."

Winston is also an excellent baseball player and has said he would bypass football if he was drafted high enough. Although he's projected to go anywhere to the middle rounds to the first, baseball was not the first thing on his mind Wednesday as he made his decision. If he does end up enrolling in college, he will play both sports and, by going to Florida State, will likely redshirt with Manuel firmly entrenched as the starter this season.

"I'm thinking about it, the baseball draft is coming soon," Winston said. "But right now I'm just focused on leading my team to a state championship and baseball will come later."

Last season as a junior, Winston threw for 2,334 yards and 17 touchdowns against just four interceptions. He is Jimbo Fisher's 16th commitment for the class of 2012 and second quarterback to join the fold.

After "The only game I watched.." Proves you don't watch enough football to have a valid opinion.  You must be a teenager or uneducated based on your writing skills.  Get off computer and get back to popping your pimples!

He has said he enjoys baseball, but football is his passion...could be a ploy for a higher draft position, but with a 92 MPH as a HS Jr., I think you hold all the cards you need to be a high first round pick.

I hope FSU treats him better than they did Xavier Lee.

Top quarterback Winston commits to Florida State

Alright its time to BLAST Florida State because they've been put on such a pedastool lately after accomplshing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING IN THE PAST DECADE.

First of all, the only game I watched of Florida State last season was the one against Oklahoma. I was there and I could see that the Oklahoma players were all much bigger, faster, and better than ALL of their Florida State counter parts during warmups. I knew Florida State did'nt have a chance from the get go, and Oklahoma was up 30 in a flash. Oklahoma ACTUALLY gave Florida State mercy in the 4th quarter and stopped running their offense to not embarass Florida State and win by 50. And now I'm supposed to believe that not only is Florida State going to be a top 5 team this year, but is supposed to give Oklahoma the game of the century? What a joke. They dont stand a CHANCE.

Enough of this garbage. Florida State, Michigan, and Notre Dame have all been ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE ever since I started watching College Football back in 2004, and yet EVERY YEAR the media vamps them up and they land some top ranked recruit that becomes a big story. Well 1 guy's not enough Florida State. At this rate, Oklahoma OWNS YOU 100 TO 1. YOU'RE NOT A TOP 5 TEAM, NOT EVEN CLOSE. LOL.

Why do they need to be BLASTed?  And what does the past decade have to do with the 2011 squad?

First of all, if you only watched the OU game last year, you did not get a good feel for the talent on FSU's sideline.  Second, every single OU player was bigger, faster and better?  Lol.  OU won impressively no doubt, but enough with the hyperbole.

Wait a second, I see that you started watching college football in 2004?  lol.

Better check the last couple recruiting classes, FSU has recruited more than just 1 stud.  They also have a new head coach and Mr. Mark Stoops.  FSU isn't back yet, but this year could go a long way in getting them there.

I look forward to your next post with random capitalization.

A excellent pick-up for the Seminoles. Once he steps on the campus,he's going to hear the chants of Charlie Ward throughout the university. I just hope that he doesn't get caught-up in "the hype" and fails to live up to the comparisons as well as the expectations of being a "dual-threat" QB at Florida State.CoolCool

If this kid is as good as the hype, then this is a golden opportunity for FSU.  Ponder was pretty good, though injury prone, and Emmanuel was okay in a backup role, but this kid could be a starter and a big game changer for FSU this year!!!  Nice recruiting.

Hueytown High School is known as the Golden Gophers.  Hopefully, the Gophers can bring home a state title before he becomes a 'Nole...although is highly unlikely that he will ever be a 'Nole given his most recent MLB draft projections.

Xavier Lee never put in the effort and it showed in his play. How many fumbles did he register, and interceptions...wow. Regardless, this is a new regime from top to bottom. I assume he was promised no redshirt. Hopefully that, plus a very young and talented baseball team, will keep him away from MLB. You never know with 18 year olds.
