The Kevin Wilson era at Indiana is off to a wonderful start as it appears that the Hoosiers may have pulled off the biggest recruiting upset in school history. Quarterback Gunner Kiel of Columbus East High School in Indiana has committed to the Hoosiers. Kiel is widely considered to be the top quarterback prospect in the 2012 class, and MaxPreps has him ranked as the second best high schooler in the country.

The 6-foot-4 216-pound quarterback is the nephew of former Notre Dame quarterback Blair Kiel, and Notre Dame was one of many schools that had made a scholarship offer to Kiel. Schools like Alabama, USC, Georgia, Michigan and Oklahoma just to name a few.

No doubt the idea of working with Kevin Wilson played a large role in Kiel's decision, as he's seen what Wilson was able to do with quarterbacks like Sam Bradford while at Oklahoma. Not to mention that Kiel will have a good chance of being able to play right away at Indiana.

Congrats on getting a decent High School quarterback. But before you start planning the Hoosier Rose Bowl trip next season, you should probably make sure that Coach Wilson also has a solid OL, WR, RB and a defense recruited. Last time I checked one person can't win a game on his own. And a lot of times these 5-star guys don't turn out as great as everyone thinks. Sam Bradford was a 3-star. I'll take him over a Mitch Mustain or Rhett Bomar anyday. But go on and be excited and hopefully Kiel works out for IU. I'm sure OU will be fine without him, along with the other schools.

Where the hell is Danny Hope.  Never used to lose good quarterbacks especially to IU  (although I would much rather see IU win than OSU or Mich).    Hope-less better have some miracles or he will be back in division II

This is a good decision I believe. It might also mean that this Wilson guy can really recruit. He sold ice to the eskimos in this case. If Kiel can be successful here with limited resources and talent, then pro scouts should take notice. Who can do more with less? NFL teams don't have unlimited money where they can build entire offenses around rookie QBs, so if he can prove that he can do more with less then he will stand out. IU is a good educational institution, and it may also be that the level of competition he plays against did not adequately prepare him for the SEC or ACC or something like that. They don't play good enough ball up north to compete with Southern teams. The athletes are in the southeast, california, and texas for the most part.

Well...I can tell you they were in the Champioship game in 2001.  When was the last time ND made it that far?

I love it!  Finally a kid that foregoes the big time programs and shows a little bit of guts by going to a second tier program.  I get so tired of the littany of blue star basketball players that take their talents to talent rich Duke.  Here is hoping Indiana can pick up their program and convert this recruiting win into some winning on the football field.

Great post!  I was raised in Indiana.  An IU basketball fan but an Ohio State football fan.  Good for this kid!  I would rather have him than Pryor.  Maybe it's time for IU football to take it's place in the spotlight.  I concur.  I hope this kid does a great job!

Notre Dame is all hype but in reality trash. They came to El Paso and threatened  little Cathredral High  that if Cathedral didn't remove "fighting Irish" from its sports names  it would sue

One of the unfortunate aspects of US trademark law is that a trademark may lapse if you do nothing to defend it against encroachment. If you you become aware of someone using your trademark and take no action then you run the risk of losing it altogether. It sounds like Cathedral High can still use the Irish nickname but will have to drop the "Fighting" part.  They can still use a leprechaun but will have to make it obviously different from the Notre Dame leprechaun. So ND comes off as the bad guy but they are just doing what they have to do to protect their rights.

I doubt that will change your opinion of Notre Dame in any way but that's the explanation.

OK, what's up w/ this part of the article "is the nephew of former Notre Dame quarterback Blair Kiel"?  Did ND really think that they would land a 5 star recruit due to a distant relationship from a scrub QB from the early 80's?

Even the ND fans have to crack up at the reach on this one & I didn't read all pages on the thread, so I apologize in advance if anyone already posted the Spaceballs quote.

Kudos to the Hoosiers for landing him.  Dude seems like a solid recruit & I'm sure he'll get a lot of playing time there.
