Iowa picked up their first commitment for the class of 2012 Thursday afternoon in Port Byron (Ill.) offensive lineman Mitch Keppy.

"We went up to practice last week and then yesterday received word that they were offering a scholarship," Myron Keppy, Mitch's father, told HawkeyeReport.com. "Iowa has always been at the top of Mitch's list and he was just kind of waiting to see if they would offer. Once they did, I think it was an easy choice for him."

Not only was Keppy the first commitment for the Hawkeyes, but he is also a legacy. Myron Keppy was a letterman at the school in 1986 and 1987 as a defensive tackle under Hayden Fry. The elder Keppy ended up practicing against current head coach Kirk Ferentz, who was the offensive line coach at the time. The familiarity with the current staff was key in the recruitment of Mitch.

"We've been up there several times and we're always very impressed with the coaching staff," the elder Keppy told the website. "Mitch has been to their camp the last two summers and really enjoyed working with offensive line coach Reese Morgan and everyone."

The 6-foot-5, 280 pound offensive lineman did not hold any other scholarship offers but several other Big Ten schools were close to extending an offer. Iowa had only three offensive lineman in the class of 2011 so Keppy commitment is at a position of need.
