MaxPreps eighth-ranked defensive tackle Delvon Simmons has been released from his letter of intent, North Carolina head coach Butch Davis confirmed to CarolinaBlue.com.

Simmons surprisingly chose the Tar Heels on Signing Day despite never taking an official visit to the school. The 6-foot-5, 265 pound defensive tackle asked for his release following the departure of line coach Brian Baker, who was only on staff for a month. Baker followed Charlie Coiner, who filled in following the departure of disgraced assistant John Blake.

According to Scout.com, Simmons listed USC, Pitt, Texas Tech, Iowa, Oregon, Florida and Rutgers as schools he would like to be released to. He is expected to choose between Texas Tech or USC.

News is not all bad in Chapel Hill however, as former North Carolina defensive tackle Brandon Willis rejoined the team on Monday following a transfer to UCLA.

you can have all the five stars you want over there...you still need to coach them.

You can have all the criminals in Gainesville... you still ain't gonna win the SEC East (which is weak btw).

Coming from a FL fan.. LMAO

I hope this 5 Star (according to Rivals, ESPN150 and Scout) ends up at SC! That'd be sweeeeeeeet. I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up in the Cardinal/Gold.

Interestingly, Brandon Willis is returning to UNC-CH after leaving when the NCAA investigation began. Apparently, he was leaving due to some family issues which could and I hope would be the real reason as he wasn't listed as a part of the investigation. With those family issue resolved, he is coming back. I wonder if the coaching staff has told him that they investigation is still ongoing and that they could face some severe punishment from the NCAA...

I doubt they would be so willing to grant him a 3rd transfer.

Simmons leaving is not the fishy part.  Him signing in the first place is the fishy part.  He signed without meeting anyone, or visiting the campus.  What is also fishy is the coach that recruited him was at Carolina a month, then left for the NFL without even signing a contract with the school.  Did he intentionally never sign the contract because he knew he was leaving?  Was he even eligible to recruit in the first place?  Did he fly in to help Butch out in recruiting as a favor?  This whole thing is fishy, but the LEAST fishy part is Simmons asking out of his LOI.  Obviously, he chose Carolina because of THIS coach, and when THIS coach left, naturally Simmons didn't care to stay on board.  But they had him locked in.  Thankfully, they let him out of his LOI due to this SHAM!

I find the whole thing rather odd.  First, the kid signs with a school he never visited, and then he leaves, allegedly because some line coach who had been with the team left after only being there for one month.  Is anyone else not buying this story?  A line coach who replaced the temporary line coach who replaced the line coach who was fired because of the fiasco of last season is the reason why this kid left?  This simply does not pass the smell test.

It appears that letters of intent are becoming basically worthless these days.  Kids go wherever they want, no matter what they siad, or what they signed earlier.  The coaches are doing the right thing by releasing most of these kids from their letters of intent, or scholarships.  The NCAA is doing the wrong thing by allowing these kids to hop from school to school and NOT face a penalty for doing things like this.  By allowing such a practice, the NCAA is encouraging such a practice.  Pretty soon, a letter of intent will be completely worthless.
