Notre Dame is no stranger playing football games in the state of California (usually against USC or Stanford) and they certainly are no stranger recruiting in the state after signing three players from the state last month. The Irish dipped into the Golden State once again, this time for their first commitment in the class of 2012 from Fresno (Calif.) defensive back Tee Shepard.

"I just wanted to get it out of the way," Shepard told IrishIllustrated.com. "I've got like 27 offers, you know, and didn't want to play with the other coaches. I just wanted to get it out of the way early."

Shepard is one of the top defensive backs in the West for the class of 2012 and held scholarship offers from Alabama, Auburn, Cal, UCLA, USC and Washington among others.

The 6-foot-1, 175 pound Shepard is scheduled to take an unofficial visit to South Bend for the Notre Dame spring game according to IrishIllustrated.com. Despite not setting foot on campus yet, Shepard sees the depth chart as one factor that helped make the early commitment easy to do.

"They don't have many [defensive backs] and the coaching staff," he said about what went into the decision. "I just wanna make my own name. I don't wanna go to an Alabama. I want to go to Notre Dame and make my own name."

Notre Dame signed four defensive backs as part of the class of 2010. The Irish started three seniors last season and have several upperclassmen on the two-deep for the upcoming year.
