You knew that former Notre Dame head coach Charlie Weis would cross paths with his old school in his new job but maybe not this soon. Just a week after joining the Florida as offensive coordinator following the Kansas City Chiefs playoff loss, Weis had his first major decommitment on offense in Kirtland (OH) offensive lineman Chase Hounshell.

A 6-foot-5, 240 pound tackle, Hounshell confirmed on his Twitter page that he switched his pledge to the Irish, saying, "I committed 2 the Univ of Notre Dame!!! Want 2 thank Gator Country for all ur support, You guys are the best, but I had 2 do whats best for me."

Hounshell had committed to Urban Meyer and Florida in August and reaffirmed his commitment to the Gators after an in-home visit from head coach Will Muschamp and staff this past weekend. Notre Dame staff had an in-home visit Monday evening, shortly before Hounshell committed to the Irish.

He is the third decommitment for Florida since Urban Meyer retired and continues a string of recent high profile commitments for Notre Dame.

With Muschamp being a defensive minded coordinator with no head coaching experience, it's thought that Weiss will be running the offense; hence, Weiss is losing out on an O-Line prospect.

Personally, I am happy about it. Even before Meyer's departure, I was suprised at the number of 3 star recruits being courted by UF. That's not to say that a 3 star recruit can't be successful but they are a 3 star recruit for a reason (too slow, small, weak, or dim-witted).

The bigger question is this: with so many other SEC schools signing 22-28 recruits every year, why is UF around 15 solid recruits? Check out Rivals or Scout. UF has the least amount of verbals in the top 25. Nebraska is pretty low too. I wonder if UF is ok with a lean year in hopes of signing a bigger class next year?

Now if he  won't be able to help ND, how was he to help Fl.? Defend the Gators all you want, but don't make youself look foolish by stating the kid isn't going to help ND. Too small you say? Well, he wasn't too small for UM now was he? The poster above you was correct, he doesn't fit Weis's system, but he will fit right in for ND and/or Fl. with UM's system.

If Urban recruits an offensive player for his spread offense, and Muschamp announces to the world that he's changing from the spread to a pro-style, de-commits are to be expected.  Where an undersized, faster O-lineman may be more valuable in the spread, 240 is clearly a disadvantage in a pro-style pass-blocking offense.

No offense to this kid but this is a 3 star recruit, on the smallest size for an offensive lineman who lives in the north so his reasons for changing his comittment to ND over Florida probably has more to do with playing time than any disrespect for Forida's program or coaches.  I certainly see ZERO connection to Weis since he wasn't recruited by Weis and never played for Weis.

Florida has two other offensive lineman recruits (a 4 star and a 3 star) and twelve returning offensive linemen on the roster, including 6 current freshmen and 3 sophmores.  If he did come to Florida he would be the smallest (as per current listed weight) by 40 pounds and about 60 pounds lighter than the average.  The "big uglies" in the Florida line are generally 6'5" and 300+ pounds.

Cuda,

You are exactly right.  Why the headline refering to Charlie Weiss when he was not involved in the situation at all?  Not that I am a fan of Weiss by any means, nor Notre Dame, nor Florida for that matter, but it would make sense that a reporter reports truthfully and honestly, rather than using a person just to get a catchy headline!

Reporters like this only spoil things for those that do a good job, just like officials that screw up the calls during a game!

Headline implies he decommitted on Weiss, but the story says he decommitted on Muschamp.  Which is it?

Im not trying to say anything about Muschamp as a coach when i say this but some kids dont want to play for a unproven. Not to mention i think some kids will also look at Weis at Notre Dame and not wanna play for him either. Its hard on a school to lose a AMAZING coach like Meyer and still keep the kids HE recruited. Best of luck to Florida though i think they will be ok.
